Forthglade
Forthglade Information
Forthglade is a dog food brand based in the United Kingdom that focuses on producing premium wet dog food.
The quality and nutrition provided by these recipes are reflected in their high price, which is far higher than most other wet dog food brands.
For those of you interested in where Forthglade products are produced, based on our research, this production takes place at multiple facilities.
More specifically, wet food products are produced by Forthglades dedicated facility in Devon, England.
However, the cold-pressed recipes are produced in an unspecified country in the EU, and lastly, their treats are produced at a bakery near Southampton, England.
If you are interested in buying Forthglade dog food, you can do so on their own online store at large online UK pet food retailers like PetsAtHome and Amazon.
You can also purchase in regular physical pet food stores and supermarkets such as ASDA, Sainsburys, Waitrose, and more.
You can use their Find A Stockist Tool to find a store that stocks Forthglade near you.
Forthglade Product Range
Forthglade has a relatively large product range of dog food recipes; however, its product range is not typical.
This is because they have a very small range of dry dog food products and a very large range of wet/canned dog food products.
Most other dog food brands have the complete opposite to this, with more dry food recipes or a balanced mix.
The small range of dry dog food products offered by Forthglade are very similar, and the only noticeable difference is their core poultry ingredient. However, they do offer their dry food in several different bag sizes, as you can see below.
However, while the dry range lacks variety, there is a significant variation in wet/canned products. This includes a large variety of meat and fish ingredients, as well as a large variety of vegetables and grains.
Forthglade does have some niche dog food recipes at this time, which include several puppy food recipes and some senior dog food.
However, many of their products are suitable for dogs of all ages, which further broadens the range of recipes available for both types of dogs.
.
Forthglade Nutrition
While the nutrition provided by Forthglade varies, it is generally above-average to significantly above-average when compared to other brands.
This correlates to extremely high proportions of protein and fat, which should rightly be at the heart of any dog food recipe.
You can see a prime example of the nutritional profile provided by Forthglade recipes below.
As you can see, the protein and fat content make up almost 80% of the nutritional content of the recipe.
It is also worth noting that some of Forthglade recipes include an impressive level of the Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

Forthglade Ingredients
High-Quality Meat & Fish Ingredients
- Chicken
- Duck
- Turkey
- Lamb
- Beef
- Salmon
Forthglade uses a moderate range of meat and fish ingredients in its recipes when compared to other brands.
This range of meat and fish ingredients includes many of the industry favorites, such as Chicken, Beef, and Salmon.
These ingredients are so widely used by dog food manufacturers because they are easy to source, relatively inexpensive, can provide excellent nutrition to dogs, high in animal-based protein and fat.
Other Notable Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes are a starch ingredient and feature in some Forthglade recipes as a major plant-based ingredient.
Sweet Potatoes, just like White Potatoes, are a very dense source of carbohydrates which is why its important their portion size is not too large.
If overly large, the portion of carbohydrates they provide can be excessive. When compared to White Potatoes, some see Sweet Potatoes as superior as they contain a large range of micronutrients.
Peas are the most popular plant-based addition to grain-free dog food across the industry. Their popularity is thanks to their relatively low cost and high nutritional value, which is high in plant-based protein.
However, there are currently concerns about a possible link between the high usage of legumes in grain-free dog food and an increased rate of canine heart disease.
While this link is not definitive, it is concerning, and you can read more about this in our article Best Dog Foods Without Peas.
Chicken Fatis added to dog food, including some from Forthglade, to increase the proportion of animal-based fat present and improve the palatability and flavor of the recipe.
Chicken Fat is chosen over alternative animal fats as it is the least expensive and is easy to source on a large scale.
Read more about Chicken Fat, including whether it can trigger a chicken allergy, in our articleChicken Fat In Dog Food.
Beet Pulpis added to a huge number of dog food recipes throughout the world, and its primary purpose is to provide dietary fiber.
Fiber, especially soluble fiber, can be very important to some dogs who struggle with irregular digestion and stools.
Beet Pulp is an incredibly dense source of dietary fiber, which makes it an excellent fit for this task.
However, beyond its fiber content, Beet Pulp provides little to no further nutrition. You can read more about Beet Pulp in our articleDried Beet Pulp In Dog Food.
Lastly, small quantities ofBrewers Yeastare found within some of Forthglades recipes.
Brewers Yeasts purpose in dog food is not to provide protein, fat, or carbohydrates but to instead boost the levels of various beneficial vitamins and minerals.
While some are big fans of the use of Brewers Yeast, others doubt whether its benefits are noticeable, especially in the tiny quantities found in dog food recipes.
You can read more about this unique ingredient in our articleBrewers Yeast In Dog Food.
Forthglade Animal Testing
At this time, we have no information on what type of animal testing Forthglade participates in if any.
Many dog food brands avoid disclosing detailed information about their testing and trials as they fear backlash from their customers.
We strongly believe that invasive or laboratory-style testing of animals is a cruel and outdated practice and one which we hope will see a significant decline.
Forthglade Recalls
Based on our research (FDA,AVMA,DogFoodAdvisor), we have no information that any Forthglade products have ever been recalled, which makes Forthglade a recall-free dog food brand.
This is a positive trait of the brand and shows that they take their safety and quality practices seriously.
Also, Forthglade has a brief mention of its safety credentials inside the FAQ section of its website.
They say the following Our pet foods are tested by a number of independent pet food authorities and independent nutritionists. We receive SALSA accreditation for our pet food manufacturing and are regularly audited by the APHA, who were previously known as DEFRA..
Regardless, we encourage all pet owners to be vigilant of future recalls from Forthglade or any other brand of products they feed their pets to ensure they remain healthy and safe.
Best of Forthglade
Cold Pressed Duck With Vegetables Review
While not quite as popular among Forthglade customers as the Chicken recipe, the above Duck recipe is our favorite from their small dry dog food range.
It includes a generous proportion of Duck which includes fresh Duck and ground Duck meat. This combination sums to over 30% of the recipes contents.
On the plant-based side, this recipe utilizes a mix of Sweet Potatoes, Peas, Beet Pulp, and select fruits to provide a moderate proportion of carbohydrates and fiber.
Lastly, several minor ingredients are also present, like Brewers Yeast, Chicory Root, and Flaxseed Oil, for their supposed health benefits.
Lamb With Butternut Squash & Vegetables Review
While it was hard to choose a favorite from Forthglades expansive wet dog food range, the above Lamb With Butternut Squash caught our eye.
The recipe includes 75% Lamb by weight which is a huge proportion and results in an impressive level of animal-based protein and fat.
Lamb is a more unusual ingredient to be used in dog food recipes as others like Chicken and Beef are more typically favored.
Due to the huge portion of Lamb, there isnt a large portion of the plant-material present, but there are tiny portions of Butternut Squash, Carrots, and Peas, which provide a modest portion of carbohydrates.
