nood salmon dog food
Nood Dog Food Review
For our Nood dog food review well take a look at the dry formula Cage-Free Chicken Recipe with Superfoods for Dogs. They also have a chicken formula for puppies, and a salmon formula for adult dogs, both being similar to the one well look at today.
Only weeks after Nood was released, and shortly after we wrote a glowing review, the product discreetly changed. Manufacture switched from USA to Thailand, and the ingredients swayed from decent ingredients to not so decent ones like rice and tapioca. Its a shame as the original was a very promising product readily available in supermarkets like Coles.
Nood Dog Food Review
On the Nood Australia website we find the following claims:
- Real Meat 1st Ingredient
- Transparent Recipes
- Formulated by Vets & Nutritionists
In addition to the above, they make the claim the food is Premium, made by pet lovers, for pet lovers.
This is all marketing spiel. Premium isnt a regulated word and can be used for anything. Real Meat is a term I always laugh at, as if it wasnt real meat it would be fake meat, and I dont really know what that means. Quorn, perhaps?
The first two ingredients are both chicken (a combo of chicken + poultry meal). Its a good start and ensures a decent amount of meat in the food, unlike other supermarket brands. The 2nd and 3rd ingredients are possibly in equal proportion, being a combination of rice and tapioca. This is a shame in respect to the previous formula which had legumes and sweet potato, but its pretty standard for a dog food to contain as much cheaper ingredients as possible. There are worse alternatives to rice and tapioca, and its good to see they havent opted for nasties like wheat or cereal/cereal by-products.
We expect the amount of chicken and poultry to equal the rice and tapioca, which is also suggested by the guaranteed analysis. The protein of 26% is respectable. 12% fat is moderate, and we estimate 44% carbs which is slightly better than average.
The 5th and 6th ingredients are similar chicken fat and digested animal protein (which I assume is what used to be referred to as animal digest which has a bad name from being a little gruesome).
We find some nice inclusions such as salmon oil, some token mixed berries, green peas and other veggies, and decent selections of natural preservatives and antioxidant.
For a supermarket brand Nood dog food is pretty good, especially considering the affordability. Why not mix it up with some fresh meats, organs, and eggs from the adjoining aisles?

Nood dog food review summary
Nood dog food still holds its own amongst supermarket brands, even with the slightly diminished Nood version 2. Compared to some of the rubbish we find on the supermarket shelves this makes Nood one of the best supermarket dog foods you can buy.
Consumer feedback has been pretty good with no major issues (read consumer comments below). If Coles is your regular haunt then Nood dog food is worth trying.

The Nood Dog Food Review: Tested & Evaluated 2024
Are you looking to add some variety to your dogs diet? Then youve probably heard about Nood dog food! This relatively new brand could be a pretty good option for mid-range budgets. Is it the right choice for your pup?
We teamed up with an independent team including veterinarians, canine nutritionists, and dog parents to test dozens of Nood foods to suss out the brand's tastiest and most wholesome varieties. After months of research and discuss, our experts have gathered everything you need to know to make the right choice. Heres our ultimate Nood dog food review!
Taste 4/5
Overall, the majority of our independent experts say their pups really like this food! Of course, it is still a kibble, so if youve got a picky eater you might need to spice it up a bit.
Nood dog food is palatable for most dogs but doesnt go beyond whats expected, so were giving the brand 4 out of 5 in this category.
Ingredients 4/5
Nood dog food has a pretty nice ingredient list, especially considering the price point. The first AND second ingredients are both named protein: chicken and poultry meal, so they make up the majority of the food. In third and fourth place we have rice and tapioca, which arent so exciting.
Related:Real Meat vs Meat Meal in Dog Food.
This brand started with a different recipe that didnt include tapioca and had veggies instead of rice. However, this was quickly changed and as of December 2021, rice and tapioca are the main carbs in this kibble.
Our team of experts note that rice is a good carbohydrate source for dogs, but we arent so thrilled about tapioca. Tapioca is a starch that comes from the cassava root, and is a good gluten replacement in processed foods that need a binder (like kibble) [1]. This is definitely a much better option than wheat or cereal by-products, but it doesnt provide much nutritional value.
Down the ingredient list we have sweet potato, salmon oil, named vitamins and minerals as well as berries, and some extra veggies.
Because we like almost all of the ingredients and the proportions are pretty nice, were giving this brand 4 out of 5 stars.
Protein content 5/5
This dog food has a named protein as the first and second ingredient, which is great news. The recipes available have whole chicken or salmon as the first ingredient, and then either poultry or fish meal to round it up.
I was thrilled to see that Nood boasts a whopping 26% guaranteed crude protein! Thats well above the minimum 18% recommended by the AAFCO [2]. And considering there are no legumes higher up the list, its likely the vast majority of that protein percentage comes from animal sources. This is a nice surprise, especially at this price point, and made me excited about feeding it to my active pup.
We also appreciate the 12% minimum crude fat content: lipids are essential to keep your dogs body healthy and in food with little animal protein this can be difficult to reach. Nood adds chicken fat as well as salmon oil to bump up the good fats. As a bonus, there are no other lipid sources in the food, so those percentages come fully from animal sources.
Additives 5/5
Our team of independent experts appreciated that this brand has added a few nice extras to round up the nutritional profile of the food. There are, of course, the regular vitamins and minerals added, which make it a complete food for a balanced diet.
On top of these, all Nood recipes have choline as a prebiotic and B. subtilis as a probiotic. Our panel shares that these two components help to keep your dogs tummy healthy and will improve their overall digestion, so they are really great to see.
Other goodies include taurine and methionine to support physiological health, mixed berries for extra antioxidants and salmon oil.
We couldnt do an in-depth Nood Dog food review without mentioning their quality control protocols. This brand prides itself in performing 260 microbiological tests per week, 1,200 ingredient nutritional tests per month and 18+ hours of employee safety training per employee per year, as well as other consistent check-ups. [3] This ensures every Nood bag is identical, the kibble composition wont change and your pup shouldnt get an upset tummy whenever you open a new bag.
Lousy quality control is rampant in the Australian pet food industry since its largely unregulated [4], so having companies that seem to care about these issues is a step forward in the right direction. I would love to have the possibility of accessing these records, but unfortunately, this isnt possible at the time.
As we really like these additives and extras, our independent panel of experts agreed to give Nood 5 out of 5 in this category.
Variety 3/5
This is a relatively new and small company, so the options available arent very wide. Nood offers two different kibble flavours: chicken and salmon, and they also have three different wet treats in their catalogue.
While I was sad to see that they dont have puppy-specific recipes, their packaging clearly states the recipes fall in line with AAFCOs regulations for all-stages dog food. They also propose owners a recommended amount for puppies, including large-breed pups, so your dog can be well-fed throughout their life.
Considering they dont offer puppy-specific options, they dont have smaller kibble for toy breeds, and you have to carefully portion out the food for large-breed puppies, our panel decided to take off 2 stars.
Price 3.5/5
This brand started out as an option to give customers access to high-quality food at lower prices. While this isnt cheap, for the quality its very reasonably priced and can fit into a good dog food budget.
Another thing to consider is that, even though you can find Nood at Coles in Australia (it's one of their best supermarket dog food options), their website also features a store locator so you can double check if you local Coles stocks their products.
As its in the mid-upper range price, our team agreed to give Nood 3.5 out of 5 in this category.
Do Not Buy If
Overall, this is a great option for many dogs. However, our independent panel of experts note that it may not be every dog. You might want to keep looking if you:
Leading Salmon Dog Food Brands for 2024: A Healthy Choice for Sensitive Dogs
There are far too many dog food brand options out in the market today.
Some are made of excellent quality ingredients and clean, natural flavor and protein sources, while others are built on cheap fillers, sub-par animal ingredients and unspecified meat meal, and artificial preservatives. Needless to say, the really great ones are mostly excessively priced.
When we talk about the best nutritional benefits from a dogs diet, we have to zero in on the protein source of the food.
The most popular animal ingredients for dog foods are beef and chicken, which are excellent sources of essential amino acids for canines. However, these two meat ingredients have also developed food sensitivities to many dogs as a result of their prevalence.
Here at DogFood.Guide we have a dedicated mission to provide dog owners like you with well-researched information so they can provide the nutrition and health care towards their dogs.

This prompted many food manufacturers to look into other less prevalent animal sources such as turkey, lamb, and salmon, which are all high-quality protein sources.
Salmon offers other essential nutrients than just protein, which are not found in other meat sources. Fish oils and omega fatty acids are highly beneficial to a dogs skin and coat. Salmon is a first-rate choice as a protein source for dogs.
In this review, we present our top choices for the best chows with salmon that offer the best nutrition and health benefits based on our assessment of their ingredient list (quality and nutritional value) and on online customer reviews.

Is Salmon Good For Dogs?
Yes, salmon is good for dogs. In fact, salmon has become a favorite main ingredient in many premium dog foods today upon recognizing the many health benefits this amazing fish has to offer our canine companions.
Salmon is an abundant source of omega 3 fatty acids, which are highly beneficial to your dogs immune system as it is for humans. Many fish fit for human and dog meals have this important nutrient.
Salmon is considered by many nutritionists as the best among the fishes used to obtain these natural omegas. These nutrients are also known to reduce inflammation and enhance a dogs skin and coat health.
Salmon is also rich in proteins, which is why it is a choice ingredient for premium-quality dog foods. Another great reason to choose salmon-based dog foods is that very few dogs are known to have allergies to salmon, unlike the more common animal protein sources such as chicken and beef.
Compared with other popular fish for consumption, salmon is considerably lower in mercury. Most salmon dog food products are cleared for mercury levels that are considered harmful to our pooch.
However, it is important to check the source of the salmon as it can tell you the quality of the fish.
Lastly, salmon can be very tasty for most dogs, which is why it is often recommended as one of the best dog food for picky pups.
What are the Health Benefits of Salmon for Dogs?
As mentioned earlier, salmon is a healthy food source for both humans and canines. It is an excellent source of natural omega 3 fatty acids that offer numerous health gains.
Salmon is also a rich source of protein, and essential nutrients like magnesium, potassium, zinc, selenium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.
Among the health benefits that can be derived from salmon are:
Healthy Skin and Coat
The natural oil from salmon is known to give your dogs skin and coat a huge boost. Some vets recommend giving dogs with problematic skin salmon oil as a supplement to address this issue. It is believed to aid in producing healthier skin and shinier coats in dogs.
Moreover, it is also suggested by some studies that omega fatty acids can help alleviate skin irritations and allergies. This is why vets recommend salmon-based dog food for food-sensitive dogs.
High in Quality Protein
Salmon is also a healthy source of great quality protein, which is the most important nutrient for healthy pups. While this fish is high in protein, its low in fat, making it ideal for elderly and overweight dogs. Since its high in protein, salmon is also wealthy in essential amino acids, which dogs need to regulate hormones and build stronger cartilage.
Healthy Immune System
Omega 3 fatty acids can also help boost a dogs immune system and even help prevent canine cancer, according to multiple studies.
Boost Brain Function
Salmons wealth of nutrients also provides health favors for the brain. It is especially good for growing puppies as well as dogs in their twilight years. The omega fatty acids are also known to aid in the brain development of fetuses in pregnant dogs.
Inflammation Reduction
Among the other notable functions of omega 3 fatty acids is their ability to help inflammation subside. This is very useful to dogs as they experience many sorts of inflammation throughout their lives.
Healthy Joints
Omega fatty acids also help in supporting joint health, especially in senior dogs and ones suffering from arthritis.
Healthy Heart
As in humans, natural omegas are also highly beneficial to a dogs heart health. Vets commonly prescribe fish oil to boost the heart health of older dogs.
Why you should Consider Salmon Dog Food?
If both you and your pooch are satisfied with the current diet, then theres really no need to shift to a salmon-based meal.
This means that your dog food has sufficient nutrients for your pup and does not cause any health issues. Of course, to know if your dog is in tiptop shape, a regular visit to the vet is necessary.
But if you often notice health-related concerns in your dogs such as itchy or flaky skin, upset tummies or sensitive stomachs, dull coat, hot spots, vomiting, skin rashes, red eyes, ear infections, and hair loss among others, then they could have developed food allergies to some of the ingredients in their current dog food.
There are also some dog breeds that are more prone to food allergies.
Among the most common food ingredients that cause dog allergies are beef, dairy, chicken, eggs, wheat, soy, corn, some grains, and even lamb.
So if this is the case in your pet household, then feeding your dog salmon food may be a great move. There are very few cases of dogs with food sensitivities to salmon.
This is why apart from the many nutritional benefits it offers; salmon-based food is a great option for food allergic dogs.
What to Look for in Salmon Dog Food?
There are hundreds of dog manufacturers throughout the world that offer salmon dog food recipes. But these products vary in the quantity and quality of salmon ingredients.
Obviously, the more premium brands use the better quality of fish as their first ingredient. The cheaper brands place salmon meal in the middle or latter portions of their ingredients deck, hence just a small component of their recipes.
Still, better products use salmon as the only animal protein and healthy fats source, to minimize the chances of food allergies.
Some salmon food formulas blend the salmon with other animal proteins to cut down the cost. The finest dog food with salmon recipes source only wild-caught salmon, which is known to be the best type, and some use commercially-raised salmons from fisheries.
So what should you look for when choosing salmon dog food good for your tail-waggers?
Well, the best salmon dog foods use fresh salmon or salmon meal as the first ingredient. As mentioned above, many salmon variants of dog food products include salmon as just a minor component of the recipe, with other animal meat meals as the primary ingredients.
Some brands use other animal proteins or fish meals such as whitefish meals or herring meal to complement the salmon.
Also, as mentioned earlier, wild-caught fresh salmon, especially from North American waters, is best because its believed to be healthier due to its natural environment, and lower mercury load.
Aside from checking the salmon content, you also need to pay attention to the other ingredients in the formula. The animal protein source is not the only common cause for food allergies in dogs.
Some of the common fillers used to make dry kibble are also known allergens like wheat, soy, corn, and grains (although whole grain brown rice rarely causes allergies).
So if your pup has food sensitivities, it may be wise to avoid these ingredients. This is why some premium brands promote their grain-free recipes. Of course, to be sure, have your four-legged child checked by the veterinarian.
We also recommend giving your furry friends dog foods that are free of artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, and GMOs. Natural, nutrient-rich, and protein-rich ingredients are undeniably healthier for both young and adult dogs.
Finally, choose a high-quality dog food that offers a complete and balanced diet, comprised of vitamins and minerals that are essential for your dogs health.
Apart from proteins and fat, they also need a good amount of carbohydrates and fibers derived from wholesome plant-based ingredients. Its best to find labels that are approved by the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials).
Its imperative for all pet owners to review the ingredients list of pet food brands (both wet and dry food) they wish to purchase.
